Summer Program

Kellie Williams Programs is the brainchild of actress Kellie S. Williams.  The Washington, DC native, won over the hearts of thousands, as the sensible, smart and sassy Laura Winslow on the highly successful ABC television network series “Family Matters.”  As a child actress, Williams learned to correlate the creative process of media arts with education that can last a lifetime.

Understanding the creative process and enrichment of students in the nation’s capitol, the Kellie Williams Programs has established the KWP Summer Program in partnership with Councilman Thomas of Ward 5 and Comcast.  This unique program will provide Washington, DC students between the ages of 14-20 an opportunity to produce a television show to air on Comcast Cable Local On-Demand. The program will also be distributed nationwide through additional cable channels, major & local networks, DVD and film festivals & events.

The program mission:

  • Creative Cognitive Learning – By creating an educational environment where students can develop their talents through learning television production & creative producing, to deal with life issues.
  • Proficiency in Media Arts – Students will receive training & professional resources to develop & execute various video/television productions.
  • Project-based Learning – By providing an environment in which students can achieve problem solving skills in a collaborative effort & develop an independent learning process with support from instructors.
  • Civic Engagement – Students will research & collect information that will help to restore their community by producing content that speaks for the under-represented community in which they live.
  • Leadership Development – Students will develop leadership skills through civic activities & television productions that the program offers, in which they will represent peers in their community as ambassadors.

The KWP Summer Program will teach students the production process from conception to completion, where students will produce TEEN TIME, a political talk show dealing with the political process of the 2008 presidential election.  Students will participate in the production of four (4) 22-minute shows. The target audience of TEEN TIME viewers will be students between the ages of 10-18 years of age, nationwide.  The purpose of this program is to spark interest in the political process for a population that is historically know as being under-served & disengaged in the politics of America.

The goal for the first series of TEEN TIME episodes will be to:

  • educate young people regarding the importance of voting & the political process
  • increase awareness & participation
  • shed light on the disproportionate political activism
  • community involvement & awareness
  • demonstrate the importance of social concerns & awareness
  • highlight the students growth & participation in the political process

The DC Office of Cable & Television (Ward 5 – McKinley Tech Campus) is the headquarters for the KWP Summer Program & TEEN TIME production.  The KWP Summer Program will conduct satellite classroom field trips to University of District of Columbia, in order for students to learn in a college-level academic environment, which includes a full-fledged television broadcast studio, journalism labs & lecture halls.  The program will consist majority of students in Ward 5 as a cohort learning experience of returning students from the 2007 KWP Summer Program.
